Here is an article from the German news site, Deutsche Welle, about the “Hitler telephone from his bunker” that was recently sold by Alexander Auctions for a great deal of money. When this appeared, a number of collectors wrote me about it but the question of authenticity is better addressed in the German article.   Hitler phone a fake: German phone expert A phone sold as one used by Hitler and billed as “arguably the most destructive ‘weapon’ of all…

For the past month I have been hard at work on the subject of the enormous mass of fake German militaria being manufactured and merchandised to the collecting world as genuine. These fakes fall into a number of categories: The first one is counterfeiting of original pieces, such as belt buckles, steel helmets, medals and decorations, uniforms and uniform accessories, and edged weapons. The second one are so-called personality items such as items belonging to famous personalities, such as Hitler,…

Reichsmarschall tunic Here is an original tunic for  Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring that was part of a large collection of tunics, trousers and military caps that was discovered in Bavaria several years ago. Here is one of the most entertaining, and revealing, letters I have ever received. It discusses certain activities between an advanced collector and one of the biggest dealers in German militaria. “Mr. Royster: About a year and a half ago, I was contacted by a Mr. Robert Johnson of Germania International, which is located in Lakemont, Georgia. He said he had heard that I knew a good deal about the artwork of Adolf Hitler and asked me to come over…
